Terms of Use
These are the rules for using H1 Lingo. They are short on purpose. By using the app, or creating an account, you agree to them.
1. Who we are
H1 Lingo is a free study app for Leaving Certificate and Junior Cycle Spanish and German. It is run by Manuela Heinz and Padraig Heinz-Ward ("we", "us"), private individuals, not a company. Contact: [email protected].
2. Who can use it: 18 and over only
- The beta is only for people aged 18 or over. By using H1 Lingo, and again when you create an account, you confirm that you are 18 or over.
- We do not check your age or ask for ID. We rely on your confirmation.
- If you give a false age, you are in breach of these Terms and you use H1 Lingo without our permission and at your own risk. To the fullest extent the law allows, we accept no responsibility or liability for anything that results from a false age confirmation. We may suspend or delete your account, and the data in it, without notice.
- If you are under 18, do not use the app. If we learn that someone under 18 has an account or has sent us personal data, we will delete it.
- Nothing in this section limits any legal duty we owe towards a child, or any right a child or parent has under the law.
3. This is a free beta
- It is free. There is nothing to buy and no payment is taken.
- It is a test version. It may contain mistakes, change, lose data, or stop working at any time, and we do not promise it will always be available.
- We may change or remove features, or end the beta, at any time. If we end it, we will try to give notice in the app or by email.
4. A study aid, not an official source
- H1 Lingo helps you study. It does not replace your teacher, your textbook or the official exam material.
- Notes, questions, model answers and marks are guides. They can be wrong. Check anything important with your teacher.
- Some content in the app was written or drafted with the help of AI, and the AI features create new content as you use them. AI-generated content can contain mistakes in grammar, spelling, facts or exam advice, even when it sounds confident.
- We give the app and its content "as is", without any promise that it is accurate, complete or up to date, to the extent the law allows.
- Any mark, grade or CAO points estimate is only a guide, not an official result.
- H1 Lingo is an independent project. It is not run, approved or endorsed by the State Examinations Commission (SEC), the Department of Education, OpenAI or Anthropic.
5. Two versions, and accounts
- The web version at h1lingo.com/app works without an account. Your progress is then saved only in your browser. You can choose to create a free account so your progress follows you between devices and you can add friends.
- The claude.ai version has no accounts. Your progress is saved only in your browser.
- You sign in with a link we email to you. There is no password. Use an email address you control, and keep access to it private, because anyone who can open your email can sign in to your account.
- Choose a nickname that is not your real name and is not offensive, misleading or someone else's. One person, one account.
- You can download your data, and delete your account at any time, in the app (Me, then Your account). Deleting it removes your account data as explained in the Privacy Policy.
6. Friends and the leaderboard
- With an account you can add friends by their exact nickname. They have to accept. You can remove or block a friend, and report one, at any time.
- Friends see only your nickname and your weekly XP, and only if you have the leaderboard switched on.
- There is no messaging, commenting or public profile.
- Do not use friend requests to harass, spam or pressure anyone.
7. AI features (Puffin and Photo check)
- Puffin (the tutor) and Photo check are AI. You are talking to an AI, not a person.
- In the claude.ai version they are powered by Claude, made by Anthropic, through your own Claude account, and Anthropic's terms also apply. In the web version, when they are switched on, they are powered by OpenAI models through our own server.
- AI can make mistakes, miss mistakes or invent things. Never rely on it for anything important.
- There are fair daily limits on AI use. We may change them.
- Do not put personal details such as your full name, school, address, phone number, or anyone else's personal information, into messages or photos.
8. Using the app properly
Please do not:
- break the law, or use the app to harm, harass or deceive anyone;
- upload photos or text containing other people's personal information, or anything you do not have the right to share;
- use the AI features to produce work that you then present as your own where that is not allowed, for example in an assessment;
- try to break, overload, scrape, probe or reverse-engineer the app, create fake accounts, or get around its limits;
- copy, resell or republish the app or its content.
If you break these rules we may warn you, suspend you, or delete your account.
9. Your work
Your answers, essays and photos remain yours. When you use Photo check or Puffin, your text or photo is sent to the AI provider to produce a response, as explained in the Privacy Policy. You confirm that anything you send is your own work, or that you have the right to use it.
10. Our content and other people's content
- The app, its design, code and original notes, questions and examples belong to Manuela Heinz and Padraig Heinz-Ward. All rights reserved. You may use them for your own personal, non-commercial study.
- Past exam papers, marking schemes and listening recordings belong to the State Examinations Commission. We do not host them. The app links to the official copies on examinations.ie.
- Other trademarks and names belong to their owners.
- The Fraunces, Instrument Sans and Caveat fonts are used under the SIL Open Font License 1.1.
11. Complaints about content
If you think something in the app infringes your rights or is wrong, email [email protected] with the details. We will look at it promptly and remove or fix it where appropriate.
12. Our responsibility to you
Nothing in these Terms limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot be limited by law. Nothing here affects your legal rights as a consumer, or our legal duties under data protection law.
Subject to that, because this is a free beta, and to the extent the law allows, we are not responsible for losses that come from using it. That includes any effect on your exam results, study decisions or grades, lost progress, mistakes in AI-generated content, or losses caused by another user. You are responsible for how you use what the app tells you.
13. Privacy and storage
Please read our Privacy Policy and our Cookies and local storage notice.
14. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms. The version and date are at the top. If we make an important change, the app will ask you to accept the new version before you carry on.
15. Ending things
You can stop using H1 Lingo, and delete your account and your data, at any time. We may suspend or end your account, or the beta, at any time, in particular if you break these Terms. The parts of these Terms that are meant to continue (for example sections 2, 10 and 12) continue after your account ends.
16. Irish law
These Terms are governed by the laws of Ireland, and the courts of Ireland can decide disputes. If you are a consumer living in another country, you keep the protection of the mandatory consumer laws of that country.
